Narrative Description of Project:

The Mwanza City Abattoir (MCA) is located in Nyakato industrial area about 8.5 km from Lake Victoria and 8 km from the city center along Musoma road .The abattoir is owned by Mwanza City Council (MCC). The situation of MCA was not adhering to the health, safety and environmental compliance. MCA had inadequate and outdated facilities and equipments for proper abattoir operation and management. Moreover, the abattoir had no waste treatment facilities. Generally, the facility was not environmental friendly as it was polluting air, ground surface and underground water which fended to Lake Victoria. MCC implemented project on rehabilitation and improvement of the MCA. The purpose of this proposed project was to reduce pollution risks to human and the environment of Lake Victoria originating from MCA operations.

MCC had planned to establish an integrated wastewater management system comprising biogas plant and constructed wetland in order to address the challenge in managing the slaughterhouse wastewater generated at MCA while producing useful byproducts of biogas and bio-fertilizer. The biogas was planned to be used to provide energy to the improved slaughterhouse facility.  The bio-fertilizer be used to grow vegetables and the surplus sold to farmers.

ENVICON was involved in carrying out baseline study for design of biogas plant and CW thereby including assessment of the existing production processes (slaughtering processes); water use and wastewater generated; energy in use; potential for reuse of resources to be recovered; wastewater pre-treatment and treatment facilities, wastewater characterization (quantity and quality), substrates and construction materials survey; macrophytes survey; and preliminary assessment of the project area.
