Narrative Description of Project:
The project intended to evaluate three sanitation systems in Iringa and Moshi, Tanzania. In Iringa the sanitation systems of the Ruaha Secondary School and the Kleruu Teachers’ College were assessed. Moshi is an example of a sanitation system based on a central wastewater treatment plant. Factors that were critical for success with these sanitation chains will be defined, such as financial, governmental, social and technological factors. Costs, environmental impacts and management consequences were carefully evaluated. The entire process of designing and developing sanitation service chains using constructed wetlands was assessed. A review of the legislative and administrative framework concerning sanitation service chains made.
Constructed wetland facility for wastewater treatment at Iringa Girls Secondary School has been established which addresses the wastewater treatment challenge at the school and generate safe water for irrigation of vegetables, gardens and trees. The lessons learnt have been assimilated in guidelines including all key elements in the sanitation service chains using constructed wetlands. Dissemination of project results has contributed to better community acceptance and confidence for sustainable sanitation service chains. Services Provided by ENVICON:-
- Establish the current access to water and sanitation in the community, school and health facilities and challenges that affecting community especially adequacy of access to water among youth for their education and livelihood;
- Establish the prevailing level of knowledge on WASH and trends on sanitation and hygiene practices in the community and schools Iringa municipality;
- Promote water sanitation and hygiene awareness(WASH) to the selected schools in Iringa municipality;
- Develop guidelines for sanitation service chains;
- Provide construction supervision of constructed wetland and training of operators.
