Narrative Description of Project:

The Mufindi Out-Grower (MOG) project was developed in 2014 by Unilever Tea Tanzania (UTT) a fully owned subsidiary of Unilever PLC with its principle activities being tea growing, primary pro-cessing and export of black tea. The MOG  project also follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2013 between the Government of Tanzania through the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Cooperatives for building Private Public Partnerships focusing on further development of tea production and manufacturing in Tanzania. UTT has partnered with IDH, The Sustainable Trade Initiative for the MOG Project. IDH builds ambitious public private coalitions with companies, civil society organizations and governments focusing on creating benefits to people including livelihoods of smallholders through sustainable production.   The Goal of MOG project was to improve livelihood of small holder tea farmers in Mufindi.

IDH and Unilever wanted to measure progress of MOG project targets through monitoring and evaluation. M&E of the MOG projects adds to the evaluation of IDH’s outcome results against longer term organization and program objectives and targets. IDH was also keen on understanding and reporting the multiplier effects and the extent to which these multiplier effects can be attributed to IDH’s work in a credible way. In order to evaluate the impact of the project, a household baseline study was conducted in 400 small holder tea and non tea farmers (outgrowers) in selected villages in Mufindi district.  ENVICON was subcontracted by LEI to carry out MOG baseline study.
