Narrative Description of Project:

Njombe Chai Project “Kwa Maendeleo ya Tanzania” was funded by The Wood Foundation Africa. The Foundation took a venture philanthropy approach, aimed to improve livelihoods by stimulating viable market opportunities to create jobs and generate wealth among the rural poor. The Foundation wanted to measure progress of the Njombe project targets through monitoring and evaluation. M&E of the projects adds to the evaluation of Wood’s outcome results against longer term organization and program objectives and targets. In order to evaluate the impact of the project, a household baseline study was required to be conducted at the start of the project.

The overall objective of the baseline survey was to construct a set of comprehensive baseline qualitative and quantitative socio-economic indicators in both potential tea farming and non-tea farming households within the 5 catchments of the Njombe Project. These indicators were intended to form the basis of a simple livelihoods monitoring and evaluation framework and for future socioeconomic impact assessments.  The survey used ‘tea farmers and non-tea farmers’ as measurement units to generate baseline socio-economic indicators. The eventual impact indicators for evaluation will be classified into three broad categories: demographic, economic and social indicators.
