Narrative Description of Project:

High turbidity water is a great challenge to availability of safe water in many plcaes. High turbidity water is a common feature in the lowlands of Arusha where water scarcity is also common. In Monduli where communities depend on dam water as their source of water, water is highly turbid (˃1000 (NTU) throughout the year. People are forced to either use this nauseating water for drinking exposing themselves to health risks or walk long distances to get cleaner water thus wasting valuable production time. Settling tank coupled with Inclined Plate Settler (IPS) has been developed and tested in NM-AIST laboratories and has shown to be feasible and effective in reducing the ever turbid waters of the Monduli earthen dams to within the Tanzania drinking water standards.

The overall objective of this project, therefore, is to validate the innovative technology of combining settling tanks with IPS to treat highly turbid water to produce potable water to rural communities. The project shall design and construct a pilot scale IPS at Arkatan village in Monduli district- Arusha, monitor and evaluate the performance of the pilot scale IPS in order to determine its efficiency in field environment. The project area is inhabited mostly by the nomadic (Maasai) communities and has challenges with availability of water.
