Narrative Description of Project:

The Zanzibar Urban Water and Sanitation Project (ZUWSP) has been initiated by the Government of Zanzibar and executed by Zanzibar Water Authority (ZAWA) with the objective of water supply and sanitation services for the urban areas of Unguja Island. The project implementation comprises 3 components namely: (a) Water Supply Infrastructure; (b) Sanitation and hygiene promotion and infrastructure in schools and (c) Institutional / Management Support. The Government of Zanzibar through ZUWSP and ZAWA contracted ENVICON to carry out consultancy services on water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) promotion and training in schools and communities in Zanzibar.

The specific objectives of this assignment were:

  • Build capacities on operation and maintenance for the school water supply and sanitation facilities in the project areas;
  •  Provision of awareness with regard to water, sanitation and hygiene education to selected schools and their surrounding communities in the project areas. The activity covered 29 selected schools in two districts in Unguja, which have their school sanitation and hygiene facilities constructed and/or rehabilitated by ZAWA

Services Provided by ENVICON:

  • Prepare inception report;
  • Conduct field baseline assessment of existing WASH facilities in selected 29 schools;
  • Conduct baseline assessment on WASH awareness to students and teachers;
  • Prepare school water, sanitation and hygiene (SWASH)  operation and maintenance (O&M) guidelines;
  • Conduct capacity building SWASH O&M guidelines in 29 schools;
  • Carry out capacity building to Shehia WASH Committees by using PHAST and CLTS methodologies;
  • Build capacity of head teachers and teachers responsible for WASH at schools; 
  • Establish SWASH Clubs     in 29 schools;
  • Build capacity of established SWASH clubs by using combination of PHAST, SLTS and School of Five methodologies;
  • Prepare progress reports and final report.
